The 1920s, one of the most important periods in Irish history, saw the foundation of the Irish Free State, which lead to the modern Irish Republic. At the end of British rule in Ireland all the old British Post boxes were painted green and the harp of the Irish State replaced royal insignia on official items. Many of these historic mail boxes are still in use in Ireland today.
