The Gift of an Irish Name

Irish Shop

A name is one of the most enduring gifts a parent can give their child. And if the child for any reason later changes that name, it’s a powerful statement about how they see themselves. Nicknames too tell us something about a person and how their loved ones see them. Regardless of whether the parents choose a classic, traditional name or embrace something unique and daring, names matter. Perhaps that is why personalized Irish gifts are always so welcomed and appreciated.

As the world grows every more globally connected, Irish names continue to spread around the world. A generation ago, most folks in North America had never heard the names Sinead, Saoirse, Liam or Cillian, but now thanks to some of Ireland’s most talented stars, they are household names around the world. And they’ve inspired parents to in Ireland and across the pond in the USA and Canada to choose Irish names for their babies.

Irish Names for Boys

Liam is one of the most popular boy names in all three of those countries. In 2024, it was the 8th most popular name for boys born in Ireland, the second most popular in Canada and the single most popular name for baby boys in the USA. (We hope Liam Neeson doesn’t let this go to his head!)

In Ireland, the top ten most popular names for baby boys born last year includes Rían (second place), Cillian (third), Tadhg (fifth), Fionn (sixth), and Oisín (ninth). No other Irish names made the top ten in Canada or the USA in 2024, but intriguingly the name Noah is on all three lists, and James is in the top ten in Ireland and the USA.

If you are looking for an up-and-coming Irish boy name, consider Odhran, which leapt from 123rd place in 2023 to 87th last year, and Senan, which hopped from 83rd to 59th place.

Irish Girl Names

In Ireland, Éabha was the second most chosen name for girls born in 2024, and Fiadh came fifth. Laoise was the fastest growing Irish girls name last year, moving from 103rd place up to 98th place. Surprisingly, no Irish names for girls made the top ten in the USA or Canada, although Ava was 8th in Canada and 9th in the USA. Éabha is the Irish version of Ava, and they are pronounced the same. The Scottish girls name Isla was the third most popular girls name for babies born in Canada last year.
